.tel is just a tld it can go over anything, I'm no fan of .mobi but what if ICANN let the .mobi and .tel registrys merge or what if telnic bought the .mobi registry and put the DNS tech under that? then they could offer the DNS tech side as a plugin service for mobi sites like all sites use databases and FTP and all that as service essencials that their over all site plugs into.

aka someone owns a .mobi and runs their own site, say appdrawer.mobi then they and all one million +? .mobi sites have a subdomain reserved that is known globaly as a new service protocal like subdomains like ftp call up a service but say tel as a service sub domain.

So all those sites get forced to have the sub domain TEL.something.mobi to be locked to telnics DNS server and proxy, so that they can continue to run their .mobi site but they now have access to a new tel service where they can build directories of their choosing to complement their site, or just store their contact details, this data then can be pulled out into their main .mobi site as if it was pulled from a normal database meaning even faster sites for people reading and apps.

But also the tel proxy can auto scan .mobi sites looking for the info if people have not setup the .tel data, aka it looks for common pages and data prefix for mail address, twitter etc, then this means phones and services can datamine the .mobi tel database quicker which makes it cheaper for companies thus growth and as .tel gets known as a service protocol database for fast lookups, they will likely want to add their other data so can buy a full .tel url with access to more than the normal allowace for a TELmobi protocol which is maybe 5-10 sub domains. So they buy a .tel name and their subdomain service is redirected, keeping the back links and the new apps that depend on knowing where tel.coke.mobi data is.

The point being that rolling out the DNS tech for .mobi sites should allow telnic to take a piece of the .mobi pie as .mobi should give them some of the reg money so that means more money for investment but also means all those who use .mobi hear about .tel and get to try it out before upgrading so they can share more data to the apps now hungry for TELmobi protocol data.

Technically it's very easy. You only have to exchange the name server of a .tel with the name server of the registrar.
After that you can set up an URL direct just like for any other domain in the world.
Currently all .tel are using the five name servers from Telnic called *0.cth.dns.nic.tel.
Telnic has an agreement with ICANN that forbids using URL redirects to other domains than .tel.
Because of that Telnic doesn't allow changing the name servers.

It is interesting, what would happen if the restriction of redirecting TEL to another TDL would be lifted, and it would became possible to redirect TEL to COM, for example?

Then value of TEL would fall down?

Redirecting a .tel to a .com-style page is only possible if you don't use the predefined name servers insisted upon for Telnic and Telnames .tel domains.

The only reason that http://www.nic.tel is able to display a .com-style page is that it breaks the rule on nameservers that Telnic/Telnames insist upon for everyone else.

Check out the registrant at http://whois.domaintools.com/nic.tel and you will see why they are allowed to do this !

http://MikeSeaton.tel

PS. Telnic need to update their nameserver settings as http://nic.tel (ie. without the www prefix) does not currently resolve.

If I understand correctly, the registrar is www.neustar.biz and nic.tel is owned by telnic. So Telnec told them to make an exception because they are the boss but for everyone else we can't.

is there a way to insert html to redirect like :
!DOCTYPE HTML>

window.location.href = "http://example.com"

Page Redirection

If you are not redirected automatically, follow the link to example

code found here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/5411538/how-to-redirect-from-html-page

The only one I can think of is save up your pounds and become the "boss" yourself in the year 2016 - regular forum readers will understand the significance of this date !

Any redirection of a .tel to another website not being a .tel is technically restricted. Only Telnic can change this rule. Currently no .tel buyer can change this. And since the Telnames style is not available at Telnic, nobody can improve the look of a .tel from Telnic.

If you want to improve .tel, you have to be a registrar.
But only very expensive registrars in China had this idea:
http://www.teltalk.org/t358-the-surprise-has-arrived-with-immediate-effect-tel-domains-can-be-used-as-fully-comprehensive-website
This info is almost one year old, and nothing has happened after.

YES IT HAS !

At least in my IE browser - all I get when I click the NovalTel link below is a 403 Forbidden error !

Alex wrote:This is what we all have been waiting for!

If your .tel domain is registered at NovalTel, you can use an extended design including:

  • Pictures
  • Headlines
  • Folders to open and close (as it was intended for template number 8 in the control panel from Telnic, too)
  • Flexible and long text
  • Contact forms including captcha codes
  • Call buttons

There seems to be a contagious disease of all .tel projects: they all die fast.
At least www.zouwei.tel is still online. (Be patient when opening the site; the response time is very long.)

I understand that there is no common way to redirect a .tel to a link that deserves the name “website”. A lot of people use jailbreaking to have an unlimited access to their smartphones.

Where are the internet specialists? Can we please try hacking the Telnic restrictions and redirect a .tel to another, useful URL?

Another idea would be if someone could program a script that will be hidden in the picture frame of a .tel and will start automatically after opening a .tel.
These are only my first thoughts. Any other ideas?

  1. Let your registrar set up a default name server for unused subdomains.
  2. Choose a subdomain. Best would be something like "www."
  3. Don't create this subdomain in the control panel from Telnic.
  4. Instruct the default name server to forward visitors to your .com.
  5. Instruct your visitors to use your .tel address including the subdomain;
    in this case: www. yourdomain.tel.
  6. Your .com will be opened.

It would be better to develop a browser extension for IE, Chrome and Firefox
and distribute it to all internet users.
This extension could instruct all browsers to bypass the Telnic servers
and use an alternative link, for instance the first website link placed on a .tel.
I recommend placing 2 links on the .tel:

  1. The destination website.
  2. A link to the browser extension for users who don't have it installed yet.
This would be legal and would eliminate all problems of the .tel extension.

@swn

What a great idea!
We only need enough .tel owners using this method. That would force Telnic to start developing .tel or to give up the huge limitations.
I see new light on .tel!

That's a new approach. If Telnic forbids developing .tel, the community will break out of prison!
I'm not sure if your suggestion is the best, but it shows how easy it is to overcome the limitations of this TLD!
