SEO at Telnames

Post by Toptel on Tue 18 Jun 2013, 5:53 am

Telnames is still clueless how to use SEO:

Could someone tell them that this forum exists with all the answers?
mikeseaton wrote:Took me a few seconds to think of 4 things that could be done:

1. Allow subdomains on Telnames domains.

2. Increase length of text allowed.

3. Let Telnames users know that TelPages exists.

4. Build the promised Tel Global Directory.

Give me a whole minute of thinking time and I'm sure I could come up with some more ways around the problem !

I can't believe it!
A website service that tries to sell domains and has not the slightest knowledge about SEO!
Please pay the money for one or two hours of consultation by an expert!
Or if you want to save the money, please call Mark Kolb for free. He will tell you how Telnames can perform better!
Why Telnic / Telnames don't want to listen?

When checking the effectiveness of SEO activity for a .tel domain it can be useful to set up a page (this will itself get indexed) to handle the search engine queries.

Here's one I created for my personal Telnic .tel at http://searches.mikeseaton.tel
- does need to be a subdomain though to keep it seperate from the main content !

@Mike
Yes, but that is a Telnic, not a Telname.
Telname: nice style, bad SEO
Telnic: good SEO, bad style
I'm waiting for a miracle called Telnicname: good SEO, nice style!

@Sunrise - IMO the hoped-for "Telnicname" will never happen !

If you read the posts of the person who controls the strategy and technical direction of both Telnic and Telnames - Henri Asseily - it's pretty clear where Telnic/Telnames is currently heading.

Of course if the current low level of total .tel registrations continues - see http://www.dottel.net for the latest figure - then the last of the $35,000,000 shareholder investment will run out by my calculation in the year 2016.

Who knows who will end up in charge then - or what direction .tel will head in ?

perhaps a SEO settings form, that asks the newbie telname person five important keywords etc (also give a short description about how that keyword is being used in the business, if its a service or if its a product etc)

then, automatically the telnames system generates 5 additional pages for each of the 5 supplied keywords.

these additional auto-generated pages would automatically include a link to the top .telname page
and to keep it simple the top telname page would not link thru to these.
they are specifically created to get SEO link juice back to the home page.

telnames would probably need to auto-index the ENTIRE database of these additional telnames pages (so there is a site-map that the search engines follow)

@Boracay - Telnames asked for SEO ideas in the Twitter post at the beginning of this thread - why not send them your idea and let us know their response ?

subdomain.domain.tel is known as working for a targeted search result, (so long as content is unique)

This is too important to be ignored by Telnames.
Telnames don't have to create 3,000 subdomains like Telnic.
But if Telnames ever wants to get results (good search results and a decent number of customers), Telnames has to launch subdomains.
But why I'm repeating myself? Nobody is listening!

Why Telnic / Telnames don't want to listen?
So true!
Telnames really tries to convince people who don’t understand SEO: http://twitter.com/tel_names/status/350172109227585536

Who will type in "david redfearn magician" into the search field from Google if he searches for a magician in London?
I will tell you how many people will use this search: exactly one person (David Redfearn himself), but not more!
Nobody else will ever visit this .tel, because it can’t be found by anyone else.
Telnames don't understand that this domain needs to be found for the search "magician london". Only then David Redfearn could have a benefit from his .tel.
But this .tel will never appear one the first page for important searches.

Can anybody explain to the newbies at Telnames why the following websites have a good ranking on Google?
www.magicians-in-london.com
www.oliverbmagic.com
www.tomlondonmagic.com

Re: SEO at Telnames

Telnames makes a fair point in this matter:

But as an internet user I would be confused what the 2 domains davidredfearn dot COM and magicianlondon dot TEL have in common:
1. The design of both domains isn't homogeneous.
2. The domain names of both domains don't suggest that they belong together.
3. David Redfearn has 2 domains now. Which one he will tell his customers when they ask him for his website?

My suggestion: Could Telnames offer a mobile website without the infamous .tel extension?
Perhaps the mobile website can be displayed under the .com domain name instead (if opened from a mobile)?
It would help a lot if the .com domain name would cover the .tel domain name in the browser address bar!
With the right settings for the .com domain this should be possible.
Sorry to say this, but the .tel domain disturbs. The mobile website from Telnames has its advantages, but please make it available without the .tel extension that nobody in the world knows.

Much better of course would be a complete solution from Telnames including a desktop website (not only a mobile website), but that would require folders (while Telnames' unlucky plan is sticking to one-pagers).

You're both wrong.

Telnames/Telnic - Get a mobile ready website in addition to your .com (Might find a few chumps, nothing massive.)

Toptel - A complete solution from Telnames to compete with your .com (Might find a few chumps, nothing massive.)

The ONLY way to get mass participation is like Yellow Pages or Facebook.

If I am looking for a Yellow Pages profile, I go to Yellow Pages directory.
If I am looking for a Facebook page, I go to Facebook directory.

Until everyone understands that a Telname is most valuable in a Telnames Directory, there will never be mass participation.

Telnames will never have mass participation as a mobile #2 tld.
Telnames will never have mass participation as a .com competitor.

Telnames will only have mass participation as a directory page.

(And an intelligent single page as it is, not the Telpages/Old .tel garbage)

Duh.

Yes, if Telnames would have a directory, Telnames doesn't need folders on their websites, because it doesn't need SEO, because it doesn't need to fight against Google.
I can't find one single person with a different opinion: .tel needs a directory (but not another garbage collection like on Telpages).
We are talking about this already for long. What can we do to motivate Telnames seeing the necessity of a Telnames directory?
A Telname without a directory is like a business card forgotten at home in the drawer.
The Telnames Partner Network is not enough, because only selected Telnames will get the benefit of it.

I could imagine Telnames would gain a lot of support if they finally publish a directory. The main question is how many years we will have to wait for it!

EXACTLY! ME TOO!

A global directory would look like something like www.ys.tel

Until they could do that well, a simple directory like Facebook would do for the thousands of Telnames that are registered.

and the advanced search page is very detailed/particular

Very interesting articles that would be important for Telnames:

Can Local Mobile Customers Find You?

Thoughts on Local SEO

How to Create Local Content for Multiple Cities

The last link is the most important, because it describes how to realize good search engine results, but it can't be done with a .tel, especially not from Telnames.

Since Telnames provides such bad SEO, this is what .tel registrants can do themselves to improve the ranking in search engines:

Owning your local web presence

Google Local Search Glossary

Link Building Strategies – The Complete List

The last link could provide the .tel registrants the best improvements in rankings. But a .tel will have always problems to compete with comprehensive websites that can be created (only) with every other domain extension.
Every .tel registrant should consider if it is worth the effort trying to push a .tel up in search engines, because it's still impossible to reach the first page at Google for economic keywords.

NO - TELPAGES IS NOT A TEL GLOBAL DIRECTORY - despite what http://telnic.org/tour-global-directory.html tries to assert !

GLOBAL = Broken down by Country

DIRECTORY
= Structured by Category

TELPAGES DOES NEITHER - what's more it's hidden away on the home page of http://www.telnic.org and missing from any page of http://www.telnames.com

So no more comments please that TelPages represents the promised Tel Global Directory - TelPages is simply an unpublicised search engine for .tels that as Aled Williams states does not even index all the content present in a .tel domain !

http://MikeSeaton.tel

PS. For anyone who fancies building the missing Tel Global Directory here is a basic requirements spec compiled by forum members - http://www.teltalk.org/t1286-tel-global-directory-to-be-launched-by-3rd-party
