Nobody is developing .tel now.
ICANN only needs to find a successor who continues to administrate the DNS servers.
Assuming no bugs arise which would of course require technical knowledge of the "Data in the DNS" structure and methodology to fix them !

No bigger bugs can arise as long nobody adjusts the .tel system - as it is the case now.
But the successor of Telnic usually should calculate some budget for maintenance.

Net Profit (30 June 2012) = -2,331,014 GBP i.e. another year of losses.

With the dramatic and continuing decline in total registrations it's patently clear that THE .TEL OPERATION AS CURRENTLY CONFIGURED IS NOT CAPABLE OF MAKING A PROFIT !
Telnic is losing a staggering 6,386 GBP (or  9,823 USD) per day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, calculated at the June 2012 loss rate of 2,331,014 GBP per annum.

Assuming Telnic make 7 USD profit (after ICANN and Registrars take theIr cut) on a .tel domain, that means Telnic need to register/renew an extra 1,403 .tel domains every day of the year just to break even !

How the **** do Telnic plan to achieve this ?

IMO this is simply not going to happen with the current setup !

Thanks for this interesting calculation!

The money is still enough for 3 more years.
These 3 years Telnic can continue hoping for a miracle.
Should no miracle happen, Telnic can arrange the following change:
The labor costs can be strongly reduced by terminating the employment contracts of the many directors.
After this Telnic will need only 50k registered domains overall to cover the yearly costs.
As you can see .tel has no problem at all.
.tel will survive in any case with the help of newbies and hardcore fans who will keep the level above 50k domains.

So the Directors hold a board meeting and vote to sack themselves - I don't think so somehow !

Assuming Telnic make 7 USD profit (after ICANN and Registrars take theIr cut) on a .tel domain, 50K x 7 = 350K USD or 227K GBP per annum, which wouldn't scratch the surface of their fixed operating costs !

If I follow the cash balance of Telnic once again, I expect an empty bank account every day:
30/06/2010: £13,287,349
30/06/2011: £9,697,396
30/06/2012: £5,954,366
30/06/2013: not public yet

It doesn't look very promising for Telnic Ltd. from the figures you quote - which are official ones I understand from Companies House - given that the £5,954,366 cash left was from almost 2 years ago !

There is a business phrase that goes:

Turnover is vanity, Profit is sanity, Cash is reality !

Hopefully this company will ride to .tel's rescue - assuming they think there's enough worth saving given that total registrations have collapsed from 333,891 in March 2011 to just 139.072 today ?
