Is this a genuine Telnames bug ?

Post by mikeseaton on Sun 11 Aug 2013, 1:32 pm

I am today using a desktop PC running XP/IE8 (yes I know XP/IE8 is out-of-date, but millions of people still use this combination on PCs and so we test on it) and am getting the following errors, checked on the Telnames sites http://ThePloughAppleton.tel and http://ThePhotographer.tel

1. When you pull up the page you get the Yellow warning triangle (usually indicating a coding error) in the bottom left of the Windows status bar and the narrative "Done".

2. If I click the "Go to our main website" link on http://ThePloughAppleton.tel or the "Sites similar to ThePhotographer.tel" link on http://ThePhotographer.tel nothing actually happens and the status bar narrative changes to "Error on page".

Can forum members please check this out - is it just me or is it the case that these Telnames sites no longer work properly with IE8 running under Windows XP ?

Thanks.

PS. I actually think Windows XP is the best operating system for developers Microsoft has ever produced, unfortunately it won't let you run a later version of Internet Explorer than IE8 !

I don't have the problem described.
But I recommend using always a newer operating system and browser because of security issues.
It's not secure to surf the internet with Windows XP.

@Expert - not sure which browser you are using - but would be interested to hear from anyone using IE8 whether they have the same issue ?

BTW never had a security problem using Windows XP and IE8 - but then again we do have constantly updating Norton running on all our desktops and laptops !

Since most companies have very tight relationships with the US secret service, I'm not using American (or British) services anymore.
Barack Obama doesn't need to know if I prefer low-fat milk or not.
I'm using the Opera browser now, because I don't want Google (Chrome), Microsoft (IE) and Mozilla (FF) spying after me.

I am still having the above problems today (Yellow warning triangle + nothing happening when web links are clicked) on the above (and other) Telnames .tels, but NOT on Telnic .tels such as http://Susie.tel

So my guess is that the web links on Telnames .tels have been coded in a different way from the web links on Telnic .tels, and that IE8 is not able to process the later way of link coding for some reason.

Telnic/Telnames (they regularly monitor this forum) can you please check this out on IE8 and fix the problem ?

Click the yellow icon to see what the error is. Probably a script error.

Loaded http://ThePloughAppleton.tel and as mentioned got the Yellow warning triangle with the narrative "Done".

Clicked the triangle and got the following error details:

Errors on this webpage might cause it to work incorrectly

Hopefully enough information for Telnic/Telnames to fix the error ?

BTW this error has been introduced in the last couple of weeks or so - previously I have been able to click Telnames web links under IE8 and they worked fine.

I brought this to Telnames attention several days ago and they have admitted that this is a problem that occurred with a recent update.  It is in fact real, and they are apparently working to resolve the issue.

@GoTel - thanks for the info - but it does beg the question "Why did Telnames not test basic functions like opening web links BEFORE making the update live ?".

I was going to post that this IE8 bug was fixed (web links now open ok) - but the fix has generated or highlighted another one !

To see what I mean:

1. Click http://ThePhotographer.tel

2. You may get a Yellow warning triangle at the left of the bottom status bar.

3. If not, click on the link "Sites similar to ThePhotographer.tel"

4. Double click the Yellow warning triangle that has now appeared and you get the following error message:

Errors on this webpage might cause it to work incorrectly

Webpage error details

User Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 5.1; Trident/4.0; GTB7.5; .NET CLR 1.1.4322; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; Alexa Toolbar; .NET CLR 3.0.4506.2152; .NET CLR 3.5.30729)

As I asked in my previous post:
mikeseaton wrote:...it does beg the question "Why did Telnames not TEST ............ BEFORE making the update live ?".
If they did test, and they didn't pick up this very obvious error, then there is something wrong with Telnames testing methodology and this needs to be resolved a.s.a.p. !
