Post by mikeseaton on Thu 19 Sep 2013, 9:19 am

Having done some checking it really is hard to find decent Vanity All-Numeric .Tels that are still available !

After a lot of searching I did find a few I like which I have just registered to keep 321.tel company !

The nice thing about owning a Vanity Numeric domain (of any extension) is that businesses in all sectors are potential buyers.

Ask the previous owner of 114.com, who a couple of months ago netted a cool $2,100,000 for that domain - see  http://www.dnjournal.com/ytd-sales-charts.htm

.Tel is not .Com of course, but it shows the commercial viability and value attributed to Vanity All-Numeric domains !

114 is the free local directory assistance number for most cities across Asia. I had that back ordered on day 1, but was not quick enough. It somehow went it .000 of a second from memory (see the whois.tel) beat out domainmonster. Went to a familiar name I've seen a few times

No need to hurry! .tel domains can always be bought after the negative trend has been stopped (if it will happen).

.... Back again  on LONG number, although discussion on SHORT numbers , is ( was ?) also an interesting refreshing preliminary to keep in mind.

Is it the right way to look , I mean focusing at phone numbers themselves in relation to LONG numbers  ? one may find other areas of interest for long number mass application or trends ?
Typically potential use in some market segments  for Internet of Things , DIY Home Automation connected to Internet, stand alone singleboard LAMP nanocomputers/servers, IMEI number, etc

Let's be realistic! I expect about 10 numeric .tel domains of eight digits or longer until end of this year, but definitely less than 100.

Of course if Telnic/Telnames wanted to be really clever and encourage the registration of All-Numeric .Tels they would produce the MISSING .TEL GLOBAL DIRECTORY (it does not exist already - despite what http://telnic.org/tour-global-directory.html asserts) and include ONLY ALL-NUMERIC .TELS.

They might even call it a TELEPHONE DIRECTORY !

It would have a marketing sense if they would let register numerics TELs for FREE (for one year or more) for all owners of respective phone numbers.

In this way they will not lose money from registrations of domains with letters (which could be really of great value for their owners) and at the same time will make good advertisement of TEL almost not spending money for making it.

Of course, the same question remains - would they like to do something, which could bring profit for the company?

BTW what I really like about the All-Numeric .Tel concept (regardless of the number of digits in the domain name, or domain number as I should perhaps say) is that it gets back to the basic idea of .tel as a SINGLE POINT OF CONTACT for all your communication channels - nothing more, nothing less.

IMO far too much effort has been expended (maybe not by Telnic/Telnames !) trying to turn .tel into a website builder in order to generate interest and registrations.

There are much better established products in the marketplace that already do that, some of them are free, and there is simply no point in trying to compete when you can offer something different to the mass offerings already around.

So come on Kash, THINK BIG, do deals with BT, Vodafone, etc to offer a FREE (1ST YEAR ONLY) AUTOMATICALLY GENERATED .TEL based on their users existing phone numbers and data and get the .tel project moving at last !

You will have the backing of the vast majority of TelTalk forum members I am sure, but you need to involve us, keep us informed, and preferably join the TelTalk forum.

The alternative is more of the same until the money runs out in a couple of years and that benefits no-one !

From Operators or.. from other stake holders as NOKIA (oh ,Microsoft should I say) , or let's say from any other phone manufacturer, especially outsiders or fading stars ... !
IPhone owners would be of course asked to pay it by themselves (lol)

Searching around, it did look in fact that horrible IMEI numbers from
mobile phones, are indeed 15 to 16 digit long according to www.IMEI.TEL ...

Interestingly , as they suggest, when you buy a brand new cell phone, registering your IMEI as a TEL means you can " TEL the world" that this IMEI is yours, with a social or practical contact or postal adress to return your phone against a reward (without encouraging Phone kidnapping !) . May be an adhesive sticker offered "protected by TEL" ;+)

Why not some mobile insurance company then couponing TELname TEL registration of IMEI for latest and expensive phones or phablets to reduce rates of lost /not found/stolen device of such, and their "costs" of "replacement" for the insurance company?
And then the sticker for your cover Inside, or your battery, is offered by the insurance company of course !
Thumb up !

I have to laugh out loud!

The Telnic design is terrible, .tel search rankings are terrible, .tel implementation is terrible, .tel sales are going down, .tel development speed is terrible, .tel communication is terrible and no improvement is in sight!

And Telnic launch long domain names while no one even wants their short names.

What comes next? The allowance to register domains longer than 63 characters? With that the breakthrough will come, because it will create a competition for the longest domain name in the world. No doubt!

#s sound very good, I have a serious question to ask.

A big question to everyone, what is the change that one day some one type telnic.tel and ring the phone at telnic?

If there is a big chance to do so, how it will be? through a software, app, web, or something like skipe etc.

Opinions please

I remember the original post - Henri made it in a thread I started on Telnic's forum (before being banned) about using .Tel's DNS for Dial/Email/Skype by Name - about 2.5 years ago !

It's known as Phase 2 of the .tel project and depends on "critical mass" first being achieved in order to give Telcos enough incentive (ie. potential customers) to modify their systems to achieve this.

No-one mentions Phase 2 these days !

Re: Telnic Announces All-numeric Long Domain Strings Available from 15th October 2013

Post by TELwax on Fri 20 Sep 2013, 5:26 am

Name calling is just a joke, which might had prospective sense 8 to 7 years ago.
6B+ mobile phones + phone directory Embedded into each mobile phones, and embarked vocal recognition just killed this idea which emerged at times there where no mobile internet clear vision, neither friendly GUIs on smartphones to manage embarked phone contacts, nor enough processing power to support voice recognition.

So just put aside that LochNessMonsterKillerApp quest concerning Joe public, as there are so many ways of offering better lookalike usage with existing free or paid products or Tools.

And large stake holders were polite in their answers to name calling new entrants :
"show me your millions of customers/users with your TEL (or your CallName) and then I will adapt my business for win/win (alt. to take advantage or yours). But in the meantime, just continue to use our traditionnal (regularly upgraded) numbering plans for calling" ,
and honestly the 200K+ "TEL owners" (counting dormants porfolioed ones several times) just show they could have been less less polite in their answer.

CallName which was mentionned above , although FREE, based on App download, and supposedly somehow viral once you enter your friends directory into the app, has only...... 234 likes on Facebook !!!!

Therefore do not loose time on this side of the moon, whom finger it is showing the moon.

On the other side of this moon, there are already in the sky new galaxies with Facebook already with 1B+ users and testing social calling, Skype with 200M+ is a reality ,not to mention Viber and others, or captive MM+ of Facetime users or BBM users, .... or billions of incumbant mobile users.

So if one of these stake holder is going to go extend "Name calling" to a large scale from what they already offer commercially or test now, it might look like .... social calling and social calling plans (offensive or defensive).
So IMHO , it is dangerous to rely on exploring tiny paths when there are already growing highways direct to your intended destination with growing trafic on them...better try to build the right car to speed correctly on these highways !!!

So either one finds some smart usage delivering added value (confort, ease of use, cheaper call, voice messaging, etc BUT adding value) a very simple and intuitive way using capabilities of TELs ( so not an enthusiastic geek vision, but a base dow to earth short sighted vision of millions of Joe public), that self propagates and build  such standalone MM+ users base, .....
or more reasonnably ... try to use already existing MM+ users bases from Fbook, BBRY, 2.75GSM etc,  to leverage introduction of a new service or a new application complementing what does exist already and based on TEL DNS.
Otherwise, change your destination/plan .

Of course on enterprise segment, one could still dream about name calling, we should say brand calling (small business are unknown names so you cannot go name calling, you have to go for search or for directory , so easier move for Joe public whatever results).
Brand calling does exist already the traditionnal way (1-800-vanity ) ... and new comers would have to speak fluently marketing & branding and afford marketing campaign costs to grab some market shares whatever the underlying technology.

And eventhough, traditionnal Brand calling can be soon be bypassed by solutions with higher added value delivered on final goal, which is mobile local shop discovery ( as a distributor of some famous brand)  and mobile purchasing/booking/prepaying with coupons or mobile money IN-store, the next battle field after the now mature business model of online e-commerce .
That is why Paypal, Fbook, Google, Apple & others are all pushing their last meter solutions these weeks/months, fishing with beacons for IRL local shops discovery from mobile, to try to turn the table upside down and cash in over walled gardens conscientiously tidied by banks and credit card operators.
In this picture Telname pre packed TEL as well as bare TELs as a cheap/easy/fast central point of contact/discovery for local shops, can still play a role towards this solutions (to be defined) because of the initial positionning at Icann level of TEL as a central point of contact, whatever fuzzy pictures comes out to mind through the TEL tracks record so far.
Of course you can do that with a dot com.
But Joe public has already tried to connect to a dot com website from his mobile or to search from Google on his mobile and he is not getting what he is looking for,  at this time.
And for the apps, Joe public is still not fully interested nor in fact understand about mobile apps either , needing too much trouble and education/marketing upon his side and are at first sight too complex regarding what he feels are only basic questions/needs.

So why not TEL ? it is easier to Paypal Fbook Google or any other OTT, based on the size of their users, to ask (or even request ) free of charge to TELnic to do some move to retrofit TELs with some additionnal features or appropriate pitch positionning .
It might be possible for them to discuss the same way with dotMobi, but might be more costly and less pure vanilla picture compared to initial pitch delivered by dot mobi at Icann and engraved into hundreds of DN registrars .

So inventing or encouraging new usage of TEL sticking to Joe public mobile or Joe public social daily use and needs simplifying his digital life in his respective communities or circles, would bring more benefits than dreaming of bare name calling, ALTHOUGH LONG NUMBERS are available to register soon from TELnic, which is supposedly the purpose of this collection of threads about long number registering (but never  said "longPHONEnumber TEL registering only ) .

Re: Telnic Announces All-numeric Long Domain Strings Available from 15th October 2013

Post by TELwax on Fri 20 Sep 2013, 8:38 am

Thx for your comment.

Indeed this was to depict why IMHO name calling is a hoax unless you are a big player, and then social calling is would possibly be named , as many very large stakeholders are battling in social fields for who is main OTT ( over the top ) player.

And therefore trying to avoid the sequence of long number => phone number => name calling application discussions go into a dead end at least from a bottom up approach from TEL owners,  due to critical masses in presence and multiple alternative narrow paths already existing.

I cannot give a significant business wise answer to your question as 86868686886.TEL has not supposedly any  significance without a context, contrary to www.movie.TEL which is self explanatory.

I also note that TELnic proudly did not so far fired out any marketing material to explain interest or usage after registration of a long number.

What I am interested in,  is whether there are any other long number application, not implying long number being a phone number, but still making senses for Joe public, and enabling further usage of TEL for the masses.
But of course these long numbers might have some role or significance in a given context, and so data attached to them could build value (against a cost).

I dicovered some already have picked up the idea of a relation between a TEL and an IMEI ( the unique identity long number for a mobile phone) www.IMEI.tel for some goals of blocking the resale on second hand market of latest Smartphones that could be stolen or lost earlier than ever thought, with their data Inside, if I understand well .
Mobile phone users could be encouraged (TELnic) to register their IMEI as a long number TEL, and put their contacts for phone returning or real ownerhip checkings by regular resellers  ( or SP, or operators, or distributors of phones to be encouraged.  Also no one commented on the forum this IMEI potential BTW.

Still there should be certainly over mass usage for Joe public, where it could make sense to build a relation between some physical device or some digital asset and some hub for whatever information or suitable contacts embedded related to this device/digital assets,  for further action by appropriated communication mean typically SMS/CALL/social account/email / postal address  .

Driving licence number or social security number might be eligible , but what service and what added value offered to Joe public in a bottom up approach ( at his initiative registering, fully paid or couponed) ?

If there is a value in such registration of K / 10K /100K tel domains, then of course it will be easy to get the stakeholders of the targeted ecosystem to discuss around a given specific project , with TELnic/TELnames certainly keen to support and introduce additionnal or related services around.
That could be enough interesting a topic indeed for all forumers here as well as for portfolio owners.

Commercialised physical device/tags with a long number.

Possibly TELnic is already in talk with the TUFF (telecommunication UK fraud forum) about specific IMEI services ? http://www.tuff.co.uk/home.asp?Page_Info=8

At telwax, I read 3 days ago in a very import newspaper that by 2025 in technology the 10 most biggest businesses will be:

1- mobile phones with us$11 trillion

in 4th place clean technology like solar energy, electric car, but  in the third place, listen in the third place will be internet of the things.

That is right internet of the things will manage 6 trillion by 2025 and the publication says that with internet of the things practically there will not be robbery without caught the robbers; shoes, close, TV, cars, sofas, every things will be tracking by internet, the publication says if some one stole your shoes, you will know where it is, virtually there will be not robbery by 2025 with internet of the things.
All the information in the internet is in the heart of the internet which is: DNS, internet of the things is phase 2 at telnic according to  Henri Asseily due that all information on any .tel domains is right in the middle of the heart of the internet: DNS

If a caller dials +868686868686, the following could happen:

  • While dialing +868686868686, your smartphone tells you whom you are calling (with the information from 868686868686.tel).
  • While the call gets connected, the .tel website 868686868686.tel of the callee could get opened simultaneously.
  • If the number +868686868686 is busy, alternative numbers from the .tel could be offered.
  • Specific content from the .tel could be pushed to the caller's smartphone display.
  • A voice mail goes into the cloud (as redirected by the .tel) instead to the hardware of the callee at home.
  • The call history could go into the cloud, too.
  • The smartphone could offer to send an e-mail to the owner of 868686868686.tel instead of dialing +868686868686.
  • TelFriends.tel can ask the caller if he wants to connect his own .tel with the .tel of the callee.
  • Third-party providers could provide additional services based on your calls.
  • Based on the information on a .tel, the caller can get much additional information (e.g. customized advertising, coupons, opening hours, routing information).

I ask those question because I am thinking to buy some 898984594858, but it's really worthy? and I want to avoid further disappointment.

My ideas are only hypothetical.
If they will become a reality, every phone user could use a numeric .tel. But will it happen?
Telnic is a very small company and has proven over many years that it doesn't have the power to reach Joe Public alone.
But Telnic has no strong partners that could help either.
I conclude that a lot of time is available in order to make a judgment.
I recommend waiting for tools to utilize numeric .tels.
You can always register a numeric .tel. But until then you can save the registration and renewal fees for many years.

Ask yourself this:
How much time have you invested in your domain movie.tel? And how much is your generated value?
The domain boxofficemovietrailers.com is available per today. Couldn't you earn more money with it (not to mention the free design options)?

I don't know the future, but in the current situation I can recommend in good conscience to drop the domain movie.tel and to register boxofficemovietrailers.com instead.
This way you can start earning money from day one. You don't have to wait for Telnic awaken from hibernation.
