Renewal of .tel domains or not?

The only rational choice is to drop everything that is not earning.

That is a general investment rule! In the beginning an investor can wait a few years, but without the expectation of improvement ... ?

I didn't want to comment but its my belief you should renew what's really worth keeping and can be developed outside the DNS restrictions or what you want compensation on loss of usage if the domain is shut down, we get loss of usage compensation? is there a small pool of money put aside at ICANN to give people who have proof of usage vs x amount of years registration?

Also Telnic own patents on the DNS proxy thing so when ICANN are forced to give this domain over to another company they most likely will open up the domain as its easer and can guarantee sales, due to declining registrations of the previous business model. Unless its in the contract that this new company who runs it has the right to use their patents without paying fees for doing so I don't see why telnic being the spoilt brat it will be when it fails would allow them free use.

Perhaps this is really all about the patents as they are worth more than the company I would guess as it looks like the real investment is and perhaps was to get the patents so they can be sold off for millions at a later date to someone like idk GOOGLE or APPLE and the proxy tel domain is just a nice cover to be able to acquire the ownership of a piece of future tech that such internet companies might want. And the whole telnames is just investors letting Kash play around until their investment runs out.

But then again I don't know anything its just a personal alleged opinion....

Some interesting points. Hadn't considered the patents being sold separately. There will be some legal mumbo jumbo with ICAAN no doubt about who owns these if the registrar goes bust. Be interesting to find out. If .tel is opened then some of my domains will have value but not so much if they are in the hundreds each to register.

Latest 2016 we'll know.
I expect the new registry for .tel won't pay any money to take over the administration of the remaining domains, because Telnic hasn't created any value.

That's a huge danger especially for domain investors. Think about this scenario: Telnic can't continue the operation of this TLD due to shortage of funds and missing earnings. While ICANN will search a new registry to administrate the TLD, the patents will be sold to financially strong people (e.g. Henri - see: http://www.teltalk.org/t96-2nd-3rd-june-2012-henri-asseily-at-coe-ecommerce-in-amman-jordan#301 ). Then the patents owner(s) can create another TLD with the DNS concept while the owners of .tel domains get nothing. The TLD .tel will continue to collapse and instead a competitor will rise.

@FrankW.

There is a solution for all of us:
Dropping ALL .tel domains and starting to buy them again after one of the following criteria has become clear:

  • Who is the new registry for .tel (after May 2016 or after money has run out)?
  • Is .tel operated by a company who is developing it?
  • Can the crash of .tel domains be stopped?
  • Are there signs that a useful product will be created?
  • Arises any kind of activity?

But why would they create a new tld for the dns if they couldn't make .tel work?

Maybe they don't want to share the profit with the other investors. They only need to develop a nice product to make it a success after they took over.

Kash and Henri from Telnic have proved already that they are very creative in creating new companies (see Telnames).

Laugh Out Loud! You should try stand-up comedy at your local performance theatre. You could make a fortune!

Here is the newest suggestion (only 6 years old - but that is the work pace in London):
Second, it should give away .tel domains to individuals and hope to make money on businesses instead.

I see it as a good news. The quicker it will fall to the very bottom - the better for all of us.
