GoDaddy offers Online Business Card for £3.39 per year...

...on top of your standard domain renewal cost.

Clever idea - using the WhoIs - this may provide enough of a "contact card" display for some businesses.

Here's the details:

Business Registration
Make your business visible to thousands of potential customers. Turn your domain listing into an online business card with Business Registration. Add your business name, logo, phone number, hours of operation, photos, and even a map to your WHOIS listing.
Just £3.39/yr

Not tried it myself so unsure if GoDaddy generates a special contact URL address to go to the WhoIs lookup ?

But if not it's very easy to set up your own using the redirect facility provided by GoDaddy for all domains i.e. you quote contact.mydomain.com to your customers as your Online Business Card which then just redirects to the corresponding WhoIs lookup page.

Not hugely sophisticated - but simple, cheap and for many companies may give them all that they need - assuming of course they're convinced they need an Online Business Card in the first place ?

Being in the process of transferring all my domains out of Moniker following their total ****-up replacing their proven reliable registrar system with the reseller system from Key Systems I've been impressed by GoDaddy - their telephone support is excellent and genuinely 24/7.

Maybe that's one of the reasons why they are the world's largest registrar ?

Unfortunately for Telnic/Telnames they have another distinction - AFAIK they were the only major registrar to refuse to carry .tel !

Since Telnic wasn't able to sell .tel as a virtual business card, others will do it with their own technology.

You may well be right - as was stated in http://domainnamewire.com/2008/11/10/telnic-a-35-million-investment-gone-awry

There is a chance — however slight — that .tel will succeed. Telnic will have to do a few things perfectly to get this to work. First, make .tel integrate into third party applications better than Plaxo, LinkedIn, Facebook, and MySpace currently do. Second, it should give away .tel domains to individuals and hope to make money on businesses instead. It must get to critical mass quickly, so that I have a reasonable belief that typing in myfriend.tel will get me what I want. Third, it needs to pray that Facebook doesn’t kill it overnight by creating some sort of online vcard.
