Why I've opened a Personal eBay Shop !

Post by mikeseaton on Sat 19 Jul 2014, 11:59 am

Like most people I use eBay to sell items I've accumulated over the years - sometimes never even used I have to admit !

I started looking into the economics of opening a Personal eBay Shop, as opposed to just using the normal Personal listing format, and decided to take the plunge.

eBay allows Personal sellers to have what they call a "Basic" shop - if you want to move to the higher levels of shop you need to be a Business seller.

But the "Basic" shop level is fine and the economics stack up quite well if you can list a reasonable amount.

It costs £20 per month in the UK but you get 100 instead of 20 Free Listings (Fixed Price or Auction, both with Free Scheduling if desired) @ £0.35 each.

Additionally you get a reduced Final Valuation Fee of 8% rather than the usual 10%, as well as improved sales management and reporting.

But probably the most important thing is the increae in traffic you get, provided you make sensible logical use of the Category levels and set up the most appropriate Keywords which go into the Title and Description of each Category page.

Once you start looking at eBay's Shop design in detail you will notice the clever way they link for different permutations of user viewing, leading to a greatly improved exposure in search engines - and hence traffic - and therefore sales !

I'm impressed with eBay's efforts which as mentioned are available to all Personal sellers at the "Basic" level.

Check out my Personal eBay Shop at http://stores.ebay.co.uk/MIKE-321-UK

I've also registered a corresponding .com to provide an easy-to-remember quick link that redirects at http://mike321uk.com

PS. The jury's still out on whether it's worth listing domains for sale on eBay - the sale prices achieved do seem low compared to Sedo etc !

i think this topic is worth responding to.
yes, ebay stores are great, My wife has had an ebay store business for 12 years. its been interesting to see what happens traffic wise/search engine wise over about 12 years. i will say this, you need to constantly tweak your ebay store listings, be pro-active month to month, the ebay rules of the game change like the weather

try to become an "ebay top-rated seller" . and then list your items with FREE and EXPRESS postage options. this is a key point in attempting to reach higher placement in the internal ebay item search

with regards to outside "google search", you will find that ebay somewhat takes the limelight...in that your specific store gets linked/ranked, but ebay somehow inserts its own generalised shop description for a generalised category

how does it work with .tel?
in every item you list, you should create a link to your store... (this is sort of allowed)
register a .telnames 1 pager (or pro .tel if you thinks thats better, she did not for ebay) and make the first link in the telnames a direct click back to your ebay store. you build up traffic for the telnames, as well as getting a click thru torbay store. anyway, it works so don't go on n on about telnames stinks this n that

bye

@Boracay - interesting post re eBay Shops/Stores (UK/USA terminology difference in eBay speak).

A couple of questions:

a) Have you or your wife ever tried selling Domain Names on eBay - if so did you get a reasonable price (compared to Sedo etc) ?

b) Do you want to give an example of your wife's .tel linking to her eBay Shop on this forum (which of course would give her a couple of free backlinks) ?

I've set up a page at http://ebay-shop.mikeseaton.tel that links to the various Categories at my eBay shop http://mike321uk.com

Seems to be helping with both search engine indexing and traffic - I am currently getting around 25 sales per month (with zero paid advertising) of stuff accumulated over the years !

How many visitors does your eBay shop receive from your .tel domain?

And how many .tel domain visitors buy from your eBay shop?
