Can't this be extended too longer than a week? and then published in some of the design magazines? for pros so we can get a really great design?

imo not many design professionals will turn up on mass I know 99 has many but for that amount of money would it not be better to talk to a pro design magazine and see if they can promote it to people who actually know how to develop a layout?

Like perhaps the uk no1 web design mag? http://www.webdesignermag.co.uk

http://www.webdesignermag.co.uk/wp-c...150&zc=1&q=100

Cees01-28-2011 07:16 AM

That's great!, but I agree with Bunjie, the time ought to be extended, especially for something this important.

Cees01-28-2011 07:51 AM

On the 99 website they mention the competition has been extended to 14 days.

I think you got confused.
The selection of the winner is by the contest owner and not by some jury at 99designs.

Anyone who has ever participated or started a design contest at 99designs know this.

The contest owner in this case is Telnic and they will choose the design. Coming to the requirements, it's the contest owner (Telnic) responsibility to post the details of the requirement and the designers work on it.

:)

teltheworld01-28-2011 11:47 AM

Hi is there any mandatory requirement to have the 'Powered By Tel' logo incorporated into the design as imho while it may be good publicity for Telnic it just spoils the look of the page and I for one don't want to have it on there.

nadya01-28-2011 11:58 AM

Hi all and thanks for your enthusiasm and support of the competition.

Indeed, the contest will run for 2 weeks, and that's the longest you can have in 99 designs. We cannot share the designs as some of the submissions have requested the contest to run blind. And yes, specialist magasines are a good idea although this round of competition is run primarily for the benefit of the .tel community. So, off to your Photoshops and let the fun begin!

Nadya, the reason for blinding a contest is to protect the designs so that other designers will use their own concept.

It's like designer A submit X as design and some other designer may submut YX (including some of the design concept submitted by designer A).

I am sure that you (Telnic) can disclose all the designs with Telnic Community members after the competition submission date.

Teltheworld, even if they don't have such plans why do you want to remind them about it :D

No, designs do not get revealed on the system until at least one winner has been chosen, at which stage all designs are revealed.

We have a maximum of 7 days to choose a winner after the competition closes, but there's no real way of sharing the designs, which remain copyright of the designer, until a winner is chosen.

We had to run the competition through a site such as 99 Designs, all of which have similar rules, in order to run this internationally.

I have to agree and disagree maximka, I have had fun trying to design a template, so amatuers and forum members should not be excluded. I do however agree that professional designers who do this for a living know a lot more about quality design.

To this end I have sent an invite to two professional designers with good reputation that I know, who will take a look and probably enter.

Hi Dottel

It's not so much a question of reminding them about the 'powered by tel' logo but more to try and make them aware that many of us do not want it to be included by default on our .Tels.

All entries can be viewed @ http://99designs.com/web-design/cont...n-decade-63737

personally I feel not great entries..
may be it's because of the limitation set in the content description..
Apart from some vector background majority of them look the same (does not give a fresh new look).

Hi Maximka,

Murai's design 111 addresses your comment about space at the very top but, with this design in mind, I just asked a question relating to the inclusion of Breadcrumbs, which dottel kindly answered, referring me to links which indicate that they are of benefit, and logic supports them being at the top.

I noticed that quite a few of the designs presented contact information in an "App" format, and positioned them to run across the page/display. To me, the operation of a mobile phone is one handed (obviously I don't drive, drink or wave at people when I'm using one) but trying to click buttons on the far side of the screen display, with my thumb, can often be difficult. For this reason I favour sites which display vertically - it's easier to scroll down.

Hi Maximka,

I'm sorry to say that I don't like your modification. The Classic .tel template represented a tab/record card, and I think that Murai's design was in keeping with that - .tels are records in a global directory. I think that, in cutting off everything above the logo/image on Murai's design, the essence is lost.

I feel the same. Also many of the designs do not follow all rules of the competition, for example not every from submitted designs follow these requirements:

/

no problem

I was expecting some great creative entries from 99designs..
If I was the contest owner, I would just withdraw contest

boracay.tel02-17-2011 10:56 AM

could this template competition be re-run with focus drawn to "technical possibilities" and have such tech limits listed. (such as expanding/closing header areas, or small icons for popup "quick looks" allowed etc, and where they can be placed)
. if the "technical limits" were really detailed out firstly, then I think most of us here (and many more pro designers) would have had a crack at this competition.

Telnic mentions in the feedback area at 99designs that many of the submitted designs need to be run past the "tech department".
Im seeing a few 5 stars that wont past that test. we here use it everyday, know what's missing, limited, have specifically asked for to be implemented, simple stuff too (most are ON/OFF options)

anyhow, a fresh look will be great.
with or without on/off options.

ps: safe bets: 78, 12, 201(slightly modified)
hopeful yet doubtful bets: 182, 212, 120, many more (wont pass the tech test)

[QUOTE)

Maximka,

If you open a filing cabinet, there are generally tabs of some sort sticking-up with the title of the contents of the files in the folders. There is something similar down the side of an indexed notebook - A, B, C, etc., and very often on Phone Directories, also.

The original "Classic" .tel template is in keeping with that style i.e. it looks as though it is a page in a registry/filing/directory system (Telpages.com), because it is cut away at the top right (see nationalartandcraft below for example)

The other existing templates do not convey the impression that they are part of something greater. They are just spaces in which to display stuff, and everyone wants them to look more like a website, or an iPhone, or a Blackberry, or just - something else!

You were commenting about the designs in the competition and specifically, about those submitted by Murai. The reason I like them is that they retain the link to a greater directory (in this case they look like cards from a Rolladex system, perhaps?).

Your modification removed what I consider to be the critical part of the design - the graphical element which suggested that it was an element of something greater.

I thought some were ok, perhaps telnic should run that contest every 6 months with a smaller prize + chance of a job until we find a design that we all aggree blows us all away then they can hire that guy/girl to do more for us.

@maximka I can see where your coming from, and I aggree theres lots of wasted space we just need a great designer to carry the ballance between less is more and using the space well and not turning it into another website, to keep its charactor of what it was designed for but allowing it to become more is a hard task. ~ lots to debate.

Or Telnic could advertise it as a perm job in some of the web designer mags, and keep a link up to a varient of the 99 designs page on telnic.org for the application process they must submit a design, jobs are hard to come by so we might get lucky that a great tallented designer submits one to Telnic and then the rest is history... I'm sure a small advert in such a mag per month real world publication is cheap....

There were very little time on the contest.
Most good designers have very limited time close ahead.

But I still think nr1 was a very good design.
Though I´m not sure how selling it would be for a hotel or small business.
In that sence I prefere design nr2.

@maximka

You have some good points about the manage links, but the design also have to be good looking. By cutting all space away it will look boring.

dialaroom02-20-2011 12:06 PM

I love these Maximka, I always use the classic template, it has a unique look. With your patterned or picture background option, we could all use them and although everyone could be different, everyone would know its a .tel. Simple yet brilliant. Hope it's included soon.

Blunderer02-20-2011 01:21 PM

I don't think the pattern in the contact areas is such a good idea (and I can see that I'm going to have to put some Google Ads on it - 24.00 Euros!).

Also, I personally would prefer to have in this template a darker color of the texts - instead of the current gray color.
