THE REALITY OF .TEL !

Post by mikeseaton on Tue 17 Jul 2012, 9:02 am

Rambo wrote:Telnic is waiting for critical mass before they lead their product to their specifications (communication services like name dialing).
Meanwhile they are not willing to spend any money on marketing.
As seen in the graphics above the SMB won’t come by themselves.

What is Telnic thinking how they can reach the market????? Please wake up!
The last published accounts (see http://companycheck.co.uk/company/03555437) showed Telnic Limited had £9,697,396 cash in the bank.

Why is a substantial part of this not being spent on the essential worldwide marketing necessary to promote .Tel to "Joe Public" ?

FORGET THE HYPE - IGNORE THE ".TEL WILL SOON BE DISCOVERED" HOPES - THIS POST http://www.teltalk.org/t307-public-interest-registry-hits-10-million-org-domain-registrations#1209 SHOWS THE REALITY OF .TEL !

Over to you Telnic !

It's easy to burn through cash if you think you have it to spare because it's a big number and it's in abundant amounts that it never goes away, and I'm pretty sure most businesses don't run year to year like I re-reg my .tels so 5-10 year plans might require saving of X amount to cover costs of X and Y employees in case U income drops below acceptable levels for E and N years.
..
But we still complain a bit about the customer service etc so maybe the X amount is not to cover that but to cover legal costs of future contracts? etc and future marketing costs as they run through a 5-10 year plan?
..
Also they still have to cover the costs of maintaining the TLD aka the cost to icann and taxes and rent costs and power costs, phone costs etc it all adds up, and long term if .tel drops below acceptable registration levels for a year or two money don't grow on trees to just pay it out.
..
And as icann or someone in the industry has said, you can't just turn off a TLD once it's been active it has to run and run and run.
..
Also DNS server costs and maintenance costs and bandwidth costs, paper costs etc

Which it will do if hardly anyone knows about the .Tel product - Attention, Interest, Desire, Action - the classic AIDA marketing phrase.

If you never get "Joe Public's" Attention (through lack of marketing) you will NOT get him to take Action and register a .Tel domain - so you eventually go bust when the investors cash runs out.

It's not Rocket Science !

There is one other possibility. Telnic never were serious about succeeding with .tel prefering to hold the cash for something else. I am only speculating about this though.

If they had been serious surely they would have employed proper designers to create many high quality templates and much more functionality in a timely fashion. The current designs are a joke.

I lost faith in Telnic over 2 years ago after I dealt with some of their staff. It was very apparent to me they were bunnies and nothing they have done since has changed that opinion.

Closing their Forum access was their latest act of complete stupidity. Their Alexa rank fell from 95,000 to 137,000 in a matter of weeks.

As is typical of British companies they were always more concerned with form than results. Well the results are now in and they are not good obviously!

Good point! Probably this is the main reason for the missing success: Telnic is not courageous enough!
Take a look at American companies in this field: GoDaddy’s style is naughty and aggressive – and successful!
That is how you do marketing in the global world!

The message from GoDaddy is: “You’re a loser if you don’t buy from us.”
The message from Telnic is: “We’ve been always kind. Would you visit us one day?”
Are you still wondering why .tel is so unpopular?

There are 3 ways to lead .tel out of this misery:
1. A massive and stunning marketing campaign
2. A significant improvement of the functionality of .tel domains
3. A joint venture with a global market leader

Telnic have to make a decision if they want to change the world (with millions of registrations) or if they want to stay in meaninglessness (with about 200.000 registrations).

So true - and they need to make that decision now !

Here's a quote about Steve Jobs that Telnic should think hard about:

Steve Jobs was born out of wedlock, put up for adoption at birth, dropped out of college, then changed the world. What's your excuse ?

My excuse is that I thought Telnic's product would evolve in due course.

It has - to this style http://YourBusiness.tel under the Telnic offshoot Telnames.

I really think it's take it or leave it time as far as .tel goes - IMO there won't be any further significant enhancements to the .tel templates in the near future.

It's critical now to concentrate on worldwide marketing - however after 3.5 years it seems unlikely Telnic will do this on the scale required - so the http://www.Telnames.com setup would appear to be the only hope left for .tel !

Do we know what the plans of Telnic are since they don't reveal them?
In the past the marketing effort haven't brought the wished success, but the product is still evolving (see the new templates).
Telnic steps have been always accompanied by a lot of criticism. Perhaps that is why they rather plan their next steps carefully without getting into discussions with the domain industry which is against innovations with the potential of compromising their running business model.
I can imagine a lot of people don’t have interest in TEL getting successful, because they live comfortable with the current situation.
If we believe in the strength of TEL, it will find it way anyway. Certainly TEL has a lot of advantages (mobile navigation, easy setup, quick access) and a beneficial product will be always accepted by customers.

That's right, successful companies place commercials on big TV stations at primetime!
