What is the best / right marketing strategy for .tel?

Post by JH on Mon 10 Sep 2012, 5:05 am

The long-term goal for .tel is to replace phone numbers. That’s a very ambitious target, but very auspicious too.
The right partners for this project haven’t been found so far.
.tel is live for a few years now, but it seems it isn’t clear how this should be promoted the right way.
So I’m asking: When promoting .tel what is the most promising marketing strategy?

If you think people are going to get a .tel domain name for a mobile website only you are crazy !

Anyone can get a mobile website for free and use their own domain name already !

I see a bit of shift in thinking in the results.

I think it should be a global directory that is yellow/white pages in style though.

Businesses/Professional Individuals will likely continue to be the predominant supporter of .tel registrations.

Per my post on the other thread is the main reason why:

.TEL makes perfect sense only if and when:

1. You have nothing on the internet and want an "easy-to-use" (?), low-cost web presence that acts as an extremely basic website, and where basic data is accessible across all internet-enabled devices.

(a.) This may be a permanent solution for .tel owners if it is all they ever need or want, (or)

(b.) It will be dropped for an upgrade to a better, more comprehensive domain and website useful across all internet-enabled devices later, (unless)

2. You want to own an easy-to-use, self-managed profile/listing/entry in a popular, global directory in addition to whatever you have or will have online.

The best case for .tel registration is that it is a "stepping-stone" to being dropped for everything better ... unless it is valuable to keep as a listing in a popular directory.

This is exactly why people have websites of all kinds, but still use Facebook, Twitter, Yellow Pages, etc. in addition to their main web presence.

A listing in TelPages is ultimately the ONLY reason to keep a .tel UNLESS you will NEVER want anything more (good luck with that).

Remember 'Cake-In-A-Box' ? Big .tel story, example, etc., and now DROPPED for better, with no REAL reason to keep it as an addition to their primary effort.

TelPages is the only REAL reason ultimately for the masses to have and hold a .tel domain ... I hope Telnic gets a clue someday.
