Name.com: new .tel offer OR new competition for .tel?

Post by Tely on Wed 04 Jan 2017, 4:40 pm

Today's newsletter from name.com:

Oh, we've got plans, friends. Big plans.

Hey, it's a new year, so it's the perfect arbitrary time to make plans and set goals. Name.com is no exception, so here are a few things you can look forward to in 2017:

  • ...
  • We're working on a sleek, simple, one-page website builder. It'll be perfect for those moments when you need a page in a hurry, like when you want to throw potential employers off the scent of your terrible MySpace page. (Just kidding, your MySpace page is wonderful.)

My guess is it's a potential competitor to the forthcoming Telnames single page template - otherwise Name.com would be tying up this announcement with a suggestion to register your .TEL domain with them now !

Big plans.
We're working on a sleek, simple, one-page website builder. It'll be perfect for those moments when you need a page in a hurry...
I think they have a very good idea: simple hosting for one-page site + simple and virus free site bilder.

It should be something simple and comfortable for noobs and lazy guys (of which consists the biggest part of the common public). I hope it will be also very cheap - 1 or 2 $.

Now you will buy COM domain and in half an hour you will learn how to use their dashboard panel, and in the next half an hour you make your "online visit card". It is a good and brilliant idea - I long waited for something like this.

At the same time Telnic does the opposite thing: it tries from it's simple and easy even for noobs product (I mean former TEL) to do somewhat complicated and labor consuming, and to force it's former customers to become webmasters or to hire webmasters for managing their TEL sites. And all this - just for the fun to see how TEL owners with their normal sites on TEL will try to compete with sites on COM.

It's very easy for other companies to copy the .tel concept and to make it much better.
And it won't take 8 years as in Telnic's case.

If I am right about this then it's a worrying development !

AFAIK Name.com are the largest Registrar of .TEL Domains.

From March 2017 .TEL is all about a Telnames single-page web site (with the option of "normal" DNS for this who want it).

And Telnic's largest Registrar, Name.com, is about to go into competition with them with their own one-page web site builder ?

Someone tell me I'm wrong about this please !

http://MikeSeaton.tel

PS. There is a certain "what goes around comes around" with this - Telnic Ltd of course bypassed all it's own Registrars and set up the direct-sell 100% owned subsidiary Telnames Ltd which sold the single-page template denied to Telnic's Registrars !

I see this as a big advantages:

Finally we don't depend on Telnic and their unwillingness to develop the .tel platform.
Now we can make our choice out of thousand new TLDs to realize the original idea behind .tel.

And this is the much better option now:
We can put any word behind the dot that suities the purpose of the intended website the best.

We are not limited to .tel anymore for the great idea behind it - with the retarted realization! Wonderful!

Someone still owns 100,000 .tel domains:

I guess that some are afraid of letting the domains go they have spent so much money for.

Although .tel will become a normal TLD in March, it still has an unique technology behind it.
Until today, the DNS framework of .tel hasn't found any real usage in the internet world.
There is still a chance that this will be discovered one day; however I don't see any movement toward it at the moment.

Before .tel will experience any real support, first it has to proof that it has advantages.
No advantage was visible during the last 8 years.
Advantages have existed only in theory.

Presumably Name.com's new "sleek, simple, one-page website builder" will be a cut-down simplified version of their existing multi-page website builder at https://www.name.com/website-builder ?

Has anyone tried this yet ?

With the new .Tel one page template soon to come....it may be hard to rank with seo.....but maybe you can rank the PDF better...it has a section to add this

what you think..

Forget about the one page template with Telhosting. Total waste of time as the Telnames figures clearly indicate.

Telnic have realized this which is why they have allowed normal hosting.

Maybe you are right.

But when Telhosting will be replaced by free web hosting for most or even all .tel domains, then the DNS data storage of contact information won't be used at all anymore.

That will be the end of the intended .tel project, because .tel won't have one single advantage over other TLDs.

Right, after March 2017 .tel has to compete with all other domain extensions only by the meaning and reputation of its name.
If we break the domain ending down to its name, what can we expect against names like:
  • .com
  • .net
  • .org
  • .online
  • .shop
  • .sex
?
Is .tel better than them?

I know exactly three domains to which .tel best suits:

ho.tel
hos.tel
mo.tel

The last one is in posession of Telnic.

Competing with other websites comes down mostly to content. If you put good content on your .tel it will compete fairly well with all the other extensions. Competition is mostly (.com is favoured) about content, not the gTLD extension.

Very good and valid point!

If you own a good domain name with the .tel extension, you can use it in a proper manner beginning in March.

For those .tel buyers who own already a quality keyword .tel domain, that is beneficial of course.

But is it worth to buy a less attractive (non-premium) domain name under .tel when options like .online, .web or others are available instead?

i don't think it makes a difference with extensions like .online and .web. Of course it's better to have the .com though.

I think .online and .web are self-explanatory.

But for website visitors, it wouldn't be that obvious why the ending .tel has been used for a website name.

No, they are moving down.
We had a small correction up - thanks to a Chinese initiative:
http://www.teltalk.org/t4452-china-unicom-with-new-tel-website-desgin
But the downtrend is unbroken.
Since summer last year, the decrease has only slowed down:
