.Tel Total Registrations by type

Post by mikeseaton on Fri 16 Nov 2012, 12:07 pm

Rather than just looking at the monthly Total .Tel Registrations (see 2012 and 2011 values), by clicking http://www.dottel.net you can see how this total is made up, and therefore what lies underneath the change in the overall total.

Here's the analysis from today's figures;

TOTAL = 247,970

TelChina = 74,989
Telnic IDNs = 85,123
Telnic Standard = 84,886
Telnames = 2,972

Telnic "Standard" domain totals are arrived at by taking the Total registrations and subtracting the figures for TelChina (TC), IDNs and Telnames (TN).

So Telnames .tels currently account for 3.5 % of Telnic Standard .tels.

I expect this percentage to rise dramatically as Telnames continues with its (admittedly low-key) marketing and Telnic Standard domains continue to get dropped - partly due to zero marketing of Telnic Standard but mostly due to the more attractive nature of the Telnames offering.

So Telnames .tels currently account for 3.5 % of Telnic Standard .tels.

Went from 2000 to 3000 rather quickly. I think once they have their apple apps perfected for telnames on idevices (iphone, ipad, ipad mini) that is, so that it can be deployed to close to 1 billion devices in people's hands (and without worrying about will it work on this that, the other operating systems) we could see the long-time missing marketing PUSH.

Why not? That's a billion handsets that they are targeting immediately with a great looking product.

After that, moderate focus could turn back to the .tel telnic original product (where the guts of the technology is under the hood) . critical mass was not being reached quickly enough with that product. It tried to cover the whole playing field, wrong, the masses were buying the apple handsets.

Anyway, So long as the telnic original .tel products are improved in key areas in the not too distant future, directories will still be created and I expect succeed.

From this disaggregated data the future of .tel seems a little eastern.

If Telchina alone has sold 75000 domains in about two years, from September 2010 (1), this means about 37000 domains per years.

And were sold about 42000 IDNS domains per year, starting from June 2010 (2).

Telnames is still in the starting blocks... and in a few months will begin the "carousel" of the new (and interesting) >1000 domains.

Theoretical this is possible, but there is one important factor missing to reach this: the cooperation with a big partner who distributes .tel - or Telnames!
Without any help and with little marketing it wouldn't be impossible!

Interesting article (check out the upbeat "responses" !) from 17 September 2010.

Here's a quote from it:

This is exactly what .tel-only partner TJML is doing with the .tel platform in China. TJML have taken the platform and are offering .tel services and registrations in Chinese, including enabling verification of ownership services and adding additional elements that will enable them to promote .tel widely. They’ve already forged partnerships with media and telecommunications companies which, as far as we understand, will enable people to utilize their .tel domains as OpenID’s and log in to some of the more popular online services.

Looking at previous press releases from Telnic it looks like .tel is a very popular and widely accepted domain extension.
Then why it takes so long to increase registration numbers?

I think the future of domains, apart historical .com, .net, org, and a few others, is in small numbers.

See for example:
NAME 175.000 domains
PRO 125.000 domains
XXX (!) 120.000 domains

The vision of .tel is the replacement of phone numbers.
If that vision should become reality one day, .tel should have more registrations than .com has today.

Just checked http://www.dottel.net and note that Telnames registrations are up to 2,999 - I wonder which domain will make it a cool 3,000 ?

What a pity Telnic didn't start off with the desirable Telnames template at .tel's launch in March 2009 !

Here's the change (by reg type) given by http://www.dottel.net over the LAST 4 DAYS :

16 NOV 2012 - TOTAL = 247,970

TelChina = 74,989
Telnic IDNs = 85,123
Telnic Standard = 84,886
Telnames = 2,972

20 NOV 2012 - TOTAL = 245,771 (-2,199)

TelChina = 74,986
(-3)
Telnic IDNs = 85,161 (+38)
Telnic Standard = 82,601 (-2,285)
Telnames =
:3,023 (+51)

You don't need to be a statistician to see where the problem is - the Telnic subdomain .tel registrations are falling off a cliff and are nowhere near being compensated for by the new Telnames .tel registrations.

We all know the sort of steps necesary NOW to attempt to arrest this continual decline - but will Telnic/Telnames ever listen to its customers ?

That would be too easy!
I'm not sure, but Telnic surely don't want to be successful soon, because they always avoid the obvious.
From what I see they are very satisfied with the current results.
Of course it's possible to push .tel into the market, but is that what Telnic want?
