The Internet Of Things - .TEL's Big Opportunity !

Post by mikeseaton on Wed 09 Jan 2013, 4:08 pm

We all know .TEL is unique in that the data is stored at the heart of the internet, the DNS.

Users don't care about this, but computers and other "things" do, since it enables automated machine-to-machine access in a structured way.

There is a thread here about Dial-By-Name, but .TEL is capable of so much more interconnectivity - THE INTERNET OF THINGS.

Have a look at the video on this BBC Click link http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/click_online/9782395.stm and start imagining what a .TEL could be used for !

One example, say I am away on holiday and have CCTV installed at home which takes positioning instructions from data held in a hidden subdomain of my .tel domain.

I could be anywhere in the world, but be reassured that the house was secure by using my smartphone to direct where the CCTV cameras were pointing and then view the resultant video stream.

A low-key example, but you get the idea, store machine-readable data in a hidden subdomain (i.e. no links from a user-viewable page), link it to any machine/device in your property, and control that through updating your .tel domain.

This really could be THE NEXT BIG THING - needs subdomains though to keep it all tidy !

What do you think - Is .TEL ready to seize this opportunity ?

Be interesting to hear Henri Asseily's current thoughts on this ?

Of course TEL is ready for it, but TEL can provide only the backbone. Internet of things involves many aspects and can be achieved only with partners from every sector like your CCTV example.

The only advantage would be to organise such links on .tel's sub domain structure.

But, technically you cannot hide a .tel sub domain URL.
And user viewable page will require encryption/scrambling to protect the content.
All these latest encryption/scrambling technologies can be applied to the end where the device is located. Then to view data you will need to decrypt/descramble at .tel page. Unfortunately, .tel does not allow this kind of technology on its current platform, and beyond the scope of TelFriends privacy services.

To achieve all that, current platform of the .tel will have to be transformed to a flexible/programmable one. Will it ever happen?

Therefore, it will be much cheaper, convenient, practical and above all it will be safer to apply such technologies on a NON .tel environment.

.tel has so many good things but NOT capable of doing everything on the Internet.
Unless some changes take place in the future. But, not in the near future. That is for sure.

@TELcp - is it correct that your .TEL projects are "on hold" now ?

@kprobe - Mark, as .TEL's main software producer what are your views on the opportunity to .TEL presented by THE INTERNET OF THINGS ?

Well, the truth is that we are unable to improve or add any features (of our own) without a roadmap. We can develop any application based on announcements made by Telnic (i.e. page2page VOIP was to be implemented) to integrate with .tel platform. When such announcements are made, we tell our customers what they can expect from .tel. At the same time we start R&D to improve our products and meet the new feature requirement. We spend money and time. But, at the end of the day such things don't happen as announced. As a result, we become liars to our customers. What is our position then?

Yes, further development work of TELcp are on hold, until a roadmap is published and implemented.

However, TELcp will continue as it is now.

It's such a shame and waste when this situation happens to .TEL software developers who must have put in thousands of hours on the .tel project !

I just don't think Telnic are going to bring the ROADMAP back - since it is over 18 months now since it suddenly disappeared.

The only logical conclusion from this is there will be NO significant development now to Telnic .tels - Telnic can easily prove me wrong by publishing a New Roadmap tomorrow !

I just don't think they will.

It's very strange! We are talking about big projects, but meanwhile nothing can be heard from Telnic.
The only vital sign from Telnic during the last half year has been the announcement that links to subdomains will open in the same browser window and that pictures from template 8 can be used for all templates now.
Meanwhile Telnames is fighting hard to find its five-thousandth customer.

I just don't think big multi-user single-tel projects fit in with their current objective
